Description
We spent two days trekking around the Shiloh Battlefield trying to get our heads around what happened here. No photograph or collection of photos could begin to tell this story. In less than two days of bloddy fighting there were nearly 14,000 Union and almost 11,000 Confederate casualties -- killed, wounded or missing. The Union dead were buried here, seventy percent were "unknown". Each of the small white headstone marks the last resting place of a union "unknown." The Confederate dead did not fare as well. There were only two known Confederate dead. The rest were buried in five trenches around the battlefield a couple of days after the fighting. It was just a couple of days in our bloodiest war. We came to Shiloh from Stones River then we headed to Corinth and then we rambled down the Natchez Trace to Vicksburg. Thoughts of the courage of the men who fought in these places will not leave your mind. And you wonder -- "Who are we today?"
