Death Valley is the largest National Park in the lower 48. In total area it's the same size a Denali National Park, without grizzlies. It is a wonderful must see! We're heading back in the Spring -- probably late February, for more wonderful sunsets, sunrises, and amazing wildflowers.

Thank you, Katya (By the way -- a wonderful name...) Not much technique. I start as wet as I can to suggest the light, establish the dark areas and then fret about details until the moment when I walk into my studio and the painting tells me that it wants to be left alone. One other thing -- paint fearlessly! If you're sure you can paint the subject pick something else that will force you to grow. It's all practice and as Chuck McLaughlin used to say, "You can't make a mistake practicing." Most of all, enjoy the escape. -- JD

Thank you very much. There’s always a temptation to go back into a sky and ‘get it right’. I wanted to do that on this painting, but I fought the urge. Until the painting is finished you don’t know how weak or strong the sky will be… TMI, I suppose, but thanks for the lovely comment. — JD
