Description
We visited Falls Creek Falls State Park in October of 2013. As soon as I scrambled down the rocky path to Buzzards Roost I knew that I wanted to paint the scene. I did a few frustrating sketches during the fall and winter that followed, decided that the subject only looked deceptively simple to paint, and moved on to other things. I put a few photos of the Roost into my Future Watercolors folder and kept getting distracted by other things and ideas. After painting Vermillion Barn I remembered Buzzards Roost and decided to give it another try. This time I tackled the subject in Procreate. It was no easier, just a different media that forgives you if you’re willing to forgive yourself.
When I got to the point where I felt the painting was finished I wondered if the place was even named Buzzards Roost. I checked Google and found out that it is. When I did I learned that this special place was a 419 acre tract of land that had split Falls Creek Falls State Park in two until it was purchased by the Tennessee Parks and Greenway Foundation. They have a terrific web page with some great views of and from Buzzards Roost. Check it out. Now I need to make a return visit to Buzzards Roost. Thanks guys!
