Irenes Viking
Every time we would drive past Irenes farm on the way to town or to get on the super slab, there he was Irenes Viking. Some days he was watching the cattle, other days he had his hood open looking for all the world like he was trying to deal with the rigors of summer heat or at another time of year he could look like a snow sculpture in progress. Sometimes he was quietly blending into the distant fall colors, especially the rust tones. And every time wed pass him Id blurt out to my wife, Ive got to take some pictures of that truck!
So the other day when we drove past Irenes farm and the Viking wasnt in the field my heart kind of sank and I muttered, I should have taken some pictures of that truck! so, the next day when I was driving back from town in my truck I pulled into Irenes driveway and there he was, coming down the driveway in the opposite direction, Irenes son at the wheel.
He graciously agreed to move the Viking back out to the pasture so I could, finally, take a few pictures. I think its a 1961 Chevrolet 60 Viking. It started life working for the South Carolina Department of Transportation. In the late sixties Irenes husband purchased it for the farm. It hasnt been on a public road since 1979, but it hasnt stopped working. Its right hand mirror seems to be a rest stop for the birds, and the cattle use it as a gathering point in their daily tidal like movements around the pasture.
Were just about to hit the road, again, but I wanted to get a few photos of Irenes Viking on the website before we did. So, here he is, Irenes Viking. Hope You like him.
