Valley of Fire - Arch Rock, a Sandstone Rainbow - 02/2016
Watercolor on 140# Arched CP
This is a subject that I first tried to paint in 2012 only to learn that it is a lot easier to have a good sketch than to create a satisfactory watercolor. My first effort sulked around my studio for almost three years before I relegated it to the paper pile. Beginning last Fall I spent several months working on a portrait. When I finally wore myself out on that subject Arch Rock seemed a lot easier. I painted four drafts of Arch Rock since mid January. I like them all in different ways. I hope you will take the time to share my enjoyment.
Never go out without your sketchbook. Paint fearlessly! Cultivate obscurity, you'll grow freedom. We are the eyes and ears of God! All images are copyright 2008-2022 All Rights Reserved.

Exquisite work.

It is very nice of you to say this. Valley of Fire deserves more time than any of us have. Valley of Fire is the result sandstone compressed for eons under an inland sea and after the sea dissolved carved by millennia of winds. A quick sketch by the Creator of the Universe. I have to remind myself of this when I get frustrated trying to suggest its beauty with pigment on paper. I am almost finished with what I think will be my last draft of this subject -- a faster, looser version of Arch Rock. I hope you'll watch for that one. Thank you, again, for your comment. - JD

This is truly great skill you put on paper!

Thank you, so much for the feature! I’m working on one more looser draft of this subject, but I keep imagining other ways to approach it… then maybe I’ll finally start doing my Newfoundland subjects.
