Artist's Description
As soon as I saw this derelict at the side of the road in Raleigh, Newfoundland I knew that I'd have to paint it. So we stopped and took any number of photos. I wished that I could know more about the house, but it's empty windows just stared back at me. At the end of the road we made a right turn and found Karl and Madge stacking their winter wood. The House had belonged to Karl's Uncle. It had originally been built by his father. After he passed a couple of the children tried to live in the Old Home Place, but the winters at the north end of Newfoundland are hard and fishing has never been an easy way to make a living. Times change, memories remain, and nature is relentless near the end of land. The Old Place looks out through silent eyes.
