Description
Daughton Park Rocks! 01/2022, watercolor on 140# Arches watercolor paper. We've been hiking and camping at Daughton Park since the late eighties. Its a fascinating place. In the spring, summer and fall there are usually cows grazing in these high meadows. It’s a treat to run into them. The distant meadow on the right is a wildflower and butterfly paradise and there excellent examples of thistle, in all stages of life, abound. Somewhere above these rocks, which look alot like amourous tortoise, is one of my favorite trees, Daughton Park Haiku, or at least the parts that are left of it. I’ve yet to paint a watercolor of this subject that I have been satisfied with. And, I'll admit that this began as a 'practice piece' and evolved to the point that I felt it was good enough for a signature. The Daughton Park landscape that I want to paint is still taunting me. In fact there are many still dancing across my inner sky. I tried to ‘loosen up’ in 2021that didn’t happen. Paint more, think less. I hope you enjoy it.

Can't believe I've never known about the Doughton home/Doughton Hall Bed and Breakfast! What a beautiful place and so close to the parkway, will have to check it out next time I'm up that way. I agree, I've always met the nicest people there at Doughton Park too. Thanks for letting me know about it.

Thank you, Dianne. Have you ever gone by the Doughton Mansion? They use it now for weddings and Bar-Mitzvahs. Not sure about the Bar-Mitzvahs, but thanks for your comment. I would say let's keep the location our little secret, but we have met so many nice people hiking and camping there thru the years, something about people who seek the High country. -- JD
